How to find a book

Searching the shelves

Find that book!

Before you may access L4U (St. Peter's College Library's On-line Public Access Catalogue), you will need a valid username and password

to log on to the Library computers.  Please contact the Information Technology Office in the College to obtain an account.

Log on to the computer and double-click the Internet Explorer icon.  If St. Peter's Library is not listed under "Favorites", go to the following internet address:

http://library.stpeterscollege.ca

Using this address you may also access our catalogue from your home computer or any internet-accessible computer.  Alternately, you may go to the College website (http://www.stpeterscollege.ca) and click on the Library linl.

St. Peter's College Library's holdings are classified according to the Library of Congress (LC) system.  This system is based on alphabetic arrangements; for example, "BF713 .V35" is an LC call number.

Most books have been given a call number and are arranged on the book stacks according to this number.  Use the automated catalogue, L4U, to determine the call number so that you can locate the book in the Library.

 1. You may search by the author's  name,  the title, the subject, or a keyword in the on-line catalogue, L4U.  For example, if you entered "warriors of the lord" in the search box and clicked "Title," this is the entry that would be displayed:

Title

Author

Status

Call Num.

Location

Last lecture /, The

Pausch, Randy

Out

QA76.2 .P38 A3 2008

St. Peter's College Library

Clicking on the title The Last Lecture will give you more detailed information about the book, including the loan period (how many days the book may circulate).

2. Write down the call number.  It is important to know the WHOLE call number including prefixes:

-"Reference" or "Special Collections" books are non-circulating and their use is restricted to the Library.

- "Reserve" books are located at the front desk of the Library at the request of members of the faculty of St. Peter's College and are for specific university classes.  Usually these books are restricted to in-library use or have a limited borrowing time.

-"Oversize" books are located in a separate section on the lower level of the Library and may be borrowed.

 Also note the location listed:

-"St. Peter's College Library" or "stpa" books are located in the main Library.

-"Academic Centre for Excellence" books are part of the Fr. James Gray Academic Centre for Excellence, located in a separate section of the main Library

-"Fiction Corner" books are located at the end of the Reference Section on the main floor of the Library

Also, check the Status of the book.  If the status is "Out" another patron has already checked the book out.  If you want to recall the book, please inform the Library staff at the circulation desk.

 3. Follow through the stacks until the book is found, utilizing the guide tabs at the end of each row. Please remember that our books are located on two levels.  The lower level is accessible via a circular staircase located in the northeast corner of the Library.  If you experience difficulty finding a book on the shelves, please ask the Library staff for assistance.

 4. To check out a book, bring the book to the circulation desk and present your St. Peter's Library borrower's card or your St. Peter's College student card.  The library staff will check the book out for you and insert a date due slip to remind you when to return the book.  The loan period for most books is three weeks unless otherwise specified.

If you have trouble accessing the on-line catalogue or locating books in the Library, please ask the library staff for assistance.
