St. Peter's College Selected Winner of the Saskatchewan Work and Family Balance Award
St. Peter's College was presented the 2008 Saskatchewan Work and Family Balance Award at a gala celebration held at the Hotel Saskatchewan in Regina on Thursday, May 8th. The College was nominated for its excellence in facilitating work and family balance in the small workplace (fewer than 50 employees) public category.
The Ministry of Advanced Education, Employment and Labour partnered with The Regina Work-Life Balance Network to sponsor the awards. These awards recognize employers who support an effective balance between work and family responsibilities for their employees and the innovative ways that employers can assist their employees with this balance. Productive, engaged employees are able to contribute to the well-being of families, communities and the economy.
"We are honoured to receive this prestigious award, and are appreciative of the commitment from the Ministry of Advanced Education, Employment and Labour and the Regina Network to recognize the importance of creating balance between work and family in today's fast-paced environment," said Rob Harasymchuk, President of St. Peter's College.
St. Peter's College was nominated for a variety of reasons which included offering staff various leave provisions, such as personal/family days, paid compassionate and emergency leave, work-time for volunteer activities and professional development. The College also offers alternate work arrangements including job sharing, teleworking, flextimes, and banked hours. The nomination also recognized the supportive workplace environment at St. Peter's College. Some of the attributes that contribute to a balance between work and family include offering staff free 24 hour access to the numerous facilities which include a gymnasium, weight room, library and equipment, as well as comprehensive health benefits and pension for full and part-time staff.
"St. Peter's College is a great place to work," said Lisa Laskowski, Director of Development. "The work culture and numerous family supportive provisions allow our staff ways to be productive at work and at home as well."
The Work and Family Balance Awards were also presented to 10 other recipients in four sectors, including private, public, non-profit and co-operative workplaces. Within each sector, there were three categories which included small (less than 50 employees), medium (50 to 250 employees), and large (more than 250 employees). Other winners included Tap Communications, Canadian Red Cross, South Saskatchewan Region, Deloitte & Touche LLP, Cypress Hills College, SaskCentral, University of Saskatchewan Students Union, Meyers Norris Penny, SaskTel, Conexus Credit Union and the Prince Albert Grand Council.
