Knights of Columbus Donates Nearly $80,000 to Region

St. Peter's College, Prairie Messenger and Rock the Mount Put Gifts to Good Use

May 12, 2008 - Today, St. Peter's College, the Prairie Messenger and Rock the Mount jointly announced that three Knights of Columbus (K of C) partners have generously donated a combined total of $79,000 this year to support their top priorities.

"These major gifts from the Knights of Columbus Home Lottery, George Mackey Foundation and Saskatchewan Knights of Columbus Charitable Foundation are a wonderful addition to our fundraising initiative to refurbish the College and to support students and their learning environment," says Lisa Laskowski, Director of Development for St. Peter's College. She added the College is grateful the Knights have been a big part of the its 87-year history as volunteers and donors.

"The Knights began investing in the College back in 1921, the year Michael Hall was built. This year's investment of $75,500 is a strong signal that the thousands of Knights of Columbus members of our province continue to recognize the significant contribution St. Peter's College makes to university education and programming in rural Saskatchewan."

Students, faculty and people throughout the region who depend on the College for its educational and conference spaces, Conexus Community Art gallery, large library and other facilities, will benefit from the renovated space, new technology and scholarships as a result of K of C support announced today.

Prairie Messenger staff and writers were excited to hear about the K of C support as well.

"The Knights of Columbus have been faithful supporters of the Prairie Messenger over the years," says Abbot Peter Novecosky, the paper's editor. "Because of the generous donation from the Knights of Columbus, the Prairie Messenger will complete its project of putting all the past 85 years of printed material into a digital format, making it much easier to access archival and historical material. We are very grateful to the Knights."

Rock the Mount organizers are ready to put the K of C commitment to their annual youth pilgrimage to good use this summer.

"The Knights of Columbus contribution to this year's event supports our plan to deliver a top-notch program of music and speakers to about 1,400 youth August 23rd at Mount Carmel," says event organizer John Boskill. "The Knights of Columbus throughout the province have been instrumental to make possible this celebration of our faith. They have been strong supporters since the beginning in 2002, both through their hands-on help and donations. We thank them for all their assistance."  K of C representatives Reg Handfield, president of the K of C Home Lottery, Frank Karain, president of the George Mackey Foundation, and Eugene Thera, president of the Saskatchewan K of C Charitable Foundation and St. Peter's College alumnus, agreed that supporting youth, education, faith and culture in east-central Saskatchewan is paramount to their mission.

"We're so pleased that St. Peter's College, the Prairie Messenger and Rock the Mount can begin to move forward with their priority plans because of our involvement," says Thera. "Knowing that thousands of students, faculty, regional residents, readers and visitors from far and wide will benefit from St. Peter's College, the Prairie Messenger and Rock the Mount makes donating worthwhile."
