We call that double knotting

St. Peter's College Alumna, Annah Gullacher went to St. Pete's in 2004-2005 and is currently finishing up her BFA degree this year.  She hopes to continue on with graduate studies at the Art Conservation program at Queen's University.  She just finished an exhibit at the Gordon Snelgrove gallery and has another one in July and August at the Humboldt and District Museum & Gallery.

The work Annah did for her graduating art show was a result of the year she spent studying in South Africa.  While she was there, her friends would ask her about her culture and she realized that she really didn't know much about it.  When she returned to Canada, she tried to learn more about her own culture by getting her Mom, Grandma and other women in the community to teach her how to work with media that is traditionally considered to be "women's work":  knitting, quilting, felting wool, rug hooking, lace making, etc.  Annah hoped that they would tell her stories while they worked.  She then made a Log Cabin quilt and put up invitations around town for people to come and help her quilt it.  Seventeen ladies came!  She recorded their conversations to use for her project.

"The title of my show, We call that double knotting, is a quote from the recorded conversation of the quilt circle.  It embodies the crux of my investigations:  these women (my collective instructional force) had found where they belonged in life and knotted themselves into place.  In sharing their experiences and knowledge with me, they enabled me to see the place I have come from and reflect more deeply on where I might go in the future."
