Program Info

Agriculture offered by the University of Saskatchewan comprises a number of different degree and diploma options.  St. Peter's College offers you the ability to start your agriculture degree in Muenster getting the benefit of small class size and excellent instruction.  See below for the available choices in Agriculture.

Agribusiness - is a combination of agricultural economics and business courses. You will understand the structure and organization of the agri-food sector and will possess business skills with particular application to the value chain extending from farm inputs through on-farm businesses, to processing, transportation, credit and marketing.

Agricultural Biology - provides you with a comprehensive background in the life sciences and allows focus on areas, such as biotechnology, genetics and evolution, plant pathology, plant molecular biology and wildlife ecology, through selection of appropriate restricted and open electives.

Agricultural Economics - gives you an understanding of current agricultural business, applied economic, social and environmental issues facing Saskatchewan and the world. You can focus on four themes: resource and environmental management, food institutions and policy, the rural economy and agricultural business management, finance and marketing or you can customize your own program through selection of appropriate restricted and open electives.

Agronomy - is one of the most diverse specializations where courses from several disciplines are taken allowing you to approach agronomic issues from several different perspectives.  You will acquire an understanding of the biological, ecological and economic principles of crop production and soil management, as well as an appreciation of the short and long term effects of agricultural production on the environment.

Animal Science - studies the feeding, breeding and management of domestic animals.  This field encompasses subjects ranging from herd genetics and high-performance diets to animal vaccines and environmental, sound animal management, with a focus on transferring this knowledge into practice.  Areas of emphasis in the program include biotechnology, genetics, computer modeling, nutrition, animal behaviour and welfare, sustainable production systems and management, pasture management, and forage production.

Food and Applied Microbiological Sciences - this program provides students with an understanding of the roles that plants, animals and microorganisms play in production agriculture, and the development of foods and bioproducts. It provides an introduction to conventional and biotechnological applications of microbiology and food science-technology in pre- and post-harvest agri-food and bioproduct industries.

Plant Science - is a study of the improvement, production and utilization of plants in agriculture, and the role of plants in natural and managed environments. You may take courses in an array of areas or may opt to focus on one of the following themes: horticulture, plant improvement or rangeland ecology.

Renewable Resource Management - sustainable use of our land, water and plant resources is increasingly recognized as a key societal goal in the 21st century.  Management of these resources requires a combination of applied science and management skills with an understanding of the broad societal context.  This program provides you with essential skills in resource management coupled with a broader understanding of the role of management in society. 

Soil Science - provides you with an in-depth understanding of the physical, biological and chemical processes that occur in the soil, it's role in plant production, and the importance of environmental management for its conservation.
